UEFA hands Athletic Bilbao's Yeray a ten-month suspension for failed drug test

Athletic Bilbao defender Yeray Álvarez has been handed a ten-month suspension by UEFA following a positive result in the anti-doping control carried out after the Europa League semi-final first leg against Manchester United.

Cause: Preventive Medication Error

The sanction stems from the involuntary ingestion of a prohibited substance contained in a preventive medication against hair loss, which Yeray had begun taking after overcoming a testicular tumour. UEFA acknowledged there was no intent to dope, but stressed that under regulations, athletes remain fully responsible for the substances they consume.

Suspension Timeline

Yeray has been provisionally suspended since June 2. He will be eligible to train again on February 2, 2026, and can return to competitive matches starting April 2, 2026. By that time, nine La Liga games will remain in the season, including away trips to Getafe, Atlético, Alavés, Espanyol, and Real Madrid, and home fixtures against Villarreal, Osasuna, Valencia, and Celta.

Training with Former Teammate

As he is not allowed to train with Athletic at Lezama, Yeray is currently keeping fit with Derio, the team coached by his former Athletic teammate Iker Muniain.

UEFA’s Statement on Responsibility

While UEFA confirmed the case was a mistake without intentionality, it underlined the principle of strict liability: According to current regulations, the athlete is responsible for his actions and should have confirmed whether the medicine was permitted before consuming it.”

Press Conference Expected

Athletic Bilbao have confirmed that Yeray will soon hold a press conference to give his personal explanation regarding the incident and suspension.
